Passengers traveling through Heathrow Airport can now carry liquids in containers up to two liters in their carry-on luggage, following the full deployment of new CT scanners across all terminals. The airport announced the completion of the upgrade, which also allows passengers to leave electronics, such as laptops, in their bags during security screening, eliminating the need for clear plastic bags for liquids.
Heathrow officials stated that the airport is now the largest in the world to have fully implemented the advanced CT scanning technology across all terminals. These scanners utilize sophisticated algorithms, a key component of artificial intelligence, to analyze the contents of bags in three dimensions. This allows security personnel to more accurately identify potential threats without requiring passengers to remove items from their luggage. While Heathrow is the largest airport to adopt this technology, it is not the first in the UK. Gatwick, Edinburgh, and Birmingham airports have already upgraded to CT scanners and implemented the two-liter liquid limit in recent years. Bristol and Belfast airports have also raised their liquid limits. At most UK airports, the previous regulation allowed passengers to carry liquids in containers of up to 100ml, which had to be placed in clear plastic bags.
The Department for Transport granted extensions to several other airports that were unable to meet the June 1 deadline for installing the new scanners. These airports are currently awaiting approval to lift the 100ml restriction.
